Mission Statement

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Special Olympics News & Announcements

Local Sports Events

Special Olympics Craven County offers three annual competitions for local athletes to participate in. Athletes who are enrolled in Craven County Schools are registered through their EC Classrooms by their teachers. Athletes who are not enrolled in Craven County Schools but have either graduated or are home schooled may register with the Community Athletes group. Group homes and day programs for adults with intellectual disabilities are also welcome to register their participants in the Community Athlete group.

Travel Sports Teams

Special Olympics Craven County offers several travel sports opportunities for athletes in our area. These sports are played in different seasons throughout the year. Each sport has weekly practices while in-season, along with opportunities to travel to compete against other Special Olympics athletes from around the state, the nation, and the world.

Although these sports, like all Special Olympics programs, are offered at no cost to the athletes, participation may be limited due to size constraints of the facilities and equipment. These sports require pre-registration to confirm team sizes, and late additions may not be able to join if the program is full.

All participants must have an up-to-date Athlete Registration form on file each calendar year, along with a Sport Participation Form for each sport they wish to participate in. Athlete Registration Forms may be downloaded from the link below, and Sport Participation Forms are received at the sport's pre-season meeting.
